This photo, taken in 1960, shows the research station built by the U.S. Navy in 1956 and opened in 1957. Eighteen men lived at the station as part of the 1956-57 International Geophysical Year. They were the first people in history to witness sunset and sunrise at the South Pole, events that are separated in Antarctica by six months of darkness and almost unimaginable cold, according to the National Science Foundation's Web site.
