A Caltrans model of the self-anchored suspension (SAS) bridge that will be the major new element of the eastern span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The new bridge span, which connects Treasure Island to Oakland, Calif., is necessary because of seismic concerns raised after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a 7.1 temblor that caused a section of the existing eastern span to collapse. The project, which is budgeted at $5.487 billion, is scheduled to be completed in 2013, and is expected to be the world's largest SAS.

CNET News.com reporter Daniel Terdiman stopped to take a look at the construction on the very last leg of his Road Trip 2007.
