One of the traditions CNET News reporter Daniel Terdiman has developed as part of his annual Road Trip coverage is prominently featuring bridges. In 2006, for example, he stopped for a visit at Santiago Calatrava's masterpiece the Sundial Bridge in Redding, Calif., and in 2007, he got a tour of the construction of the new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
During Road Trip 2008, however, Terdiman didn't have a chance to spend a significant amount of time examining any single bridge. Instead, he encouraged readers to submit photos of bridges they enjoy, promising to use the best ones in a later gallery.
This is that gallery, mixing photos Terdiman took of bridges he passed by during the 4,593 mile-long journey with those submitted by readers, as well as some by the engineering firms that built the spans located in or very near places Terdiman drove through.
This is the Gateway Boulevard Bridge in Nashville, Tenn., which connects the city's eastern section with its downtown area. It is more than a quarter mile long, in total, with a main river span of 545 feet crossing the Cumberland River.
