How do I edit video descriptions in iTunes?
January 30, 2008
Q
In iTunes, I noticed that TV shows I purchased through iTunes include a handy episode description, but TV shows I've added from my own collection don't. I've tried going into the built-in iTunes tag editor to add my own description, but there doesn't seem to be a field for it. Is there a way for me to create my own TV episode descriptions in iTunes?

With its extensive tagging and sorting features, iTunes is a great tool for organizing digital movies and TV episodes, especially if you own an iPod or an Apple TV. Still, for some unknown reason, Apple doesn't offer iTunes users a way to create or edit their own Description tags for adding plot summaries to TV episodes or movies.

It can be done, however, by using a third-party tagging tool. One of the best ones out there is a Mac-only application called Lostify, which was made by fans of the TV show Lost. (I can't imagine trying to write an episode summary for that show!) After opening a video file with Lostify, you can add all sorts of tag information, such as MPAA rating, content advisories, and that all-important Description tag.

PC users can take advantage of an equally capable application called Tagger, which is based around Java. For serious, no-frills, video-tag batch editing, the more adventurous among you can try the command-line Atomic Parsley utility.
