Wireless music store showdown: Sprint vs. Verizon

Online music stores such as iTunes, Napster, and Walmart.com are a dime a dozen these days. If you want to stay (way) ahead of the curve when purchasing digital music, check out wireless music stores. From browsing and sampling new releases at the bus stop to jamming down the street to your latest purchase, these stores go wherever you go.

There are two major players--first came the Sprint Music Store in late 2005, then came Verizon's Wireless V Cast Music in January--plus the lesser-known Amp'd Mobile. Buying music using your cell phone is expensive: On top of the carrier service fee, you'll have to shell out up to $2.50 per track. So downloading music wherever, whenever is definitely a luxury, though you do get an additional higher-quality file for your computer. Currently, only certain phones are compatible with the services, and music catalogs are much barer than iTunes and Rhapsody. Both Sprint and Verizon offer similar deals and allow you to transfer your own tunes to your phone. Sprint charges more per track, while Verizon's service doesn't support native MP3 playback. Don't mistake these services with iTunes phones (such as the Motorola Rokr), which don't connect wirelessly to a music store.

Review summary The Sprint Music Store fits the bill if you're looking for instant gratification on the digital music front, but the $2.50-per-track price tag is hard to swallow. The V Cast Music with Rhapsody experience is easy to use and understand, and, by combining both the mobile download and the Rhapsody subscription service in one monthly plan, delivers considerable bang for the buck .
