Democrats find 'green' political convention tough to enforce

DENVER--The Democratic Party has boasted that its convention here will be "the most environmentally-sustainable" gathering in the party's history, complete with a director of sustainability, low-power lighting in some areas, and calculations of carbon footprints.

Some of the goals include diverting 85 percent of waste that would normally go to a landfill, finding hundreds of people to sort waste into recycling-compost-landfill containers, and devising what The Wall Street Journal described as "lean 'n' green" catering guidelines that say food described thusly must not be fried and shall contain three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple, and white.

That was the claim. And it has worked to a large extent: a troika of trash containers (again, recycling, compost, and landfill) dot the convention complex, even in areas that aren't officially part of the event. Drinking straws are made from corn and biodegradable. Room keys for hotels are made of wood. Delegates are buying carbon offsets.

But reality doesn't always match expectations. Bikes aren't permitted inside the convention's security perimeter, so golf carts and other vehicles are used. The wooden card keys proved buggy, and some were replaced with more-reliable plastic. Fried mini-donuts were prominently on sale inside the Pepsi Center. Party VIPs and celebrities told their decidedly non-green town cars and GMC Yukon XL mega-SUVs--rented from limo provider A Class Above Transportation--to idle, with engines and air conditioning on, in the nearby pickup area. (What self-respecting conference-goer wants to climb into a GMC Yukon when it's a toasty 93 degrees in the shade?)

Plus, a gathering of tens of thousands of people (and perhaps 70,000 for Barack Obama's Thursday acceptance speech) generate a whopping amount of trash. Even if it's sorted, recycling Obama-Biden signs takes energy, as does trucking in what the Journal reported to be 900 volunteers to monitor waste cans and perform the trash-separation, thereby taking them away from tasks that might be more productive.

Let us stipulate that the Democratic Party, perhaps because it was good marketing or perhaps because it was a sound principle, made an effort to promote recycling here. But whopping huge mounds of trash remain unavoidable--and the presence of idling SUVs--show that the concept remains more of a slogan than reality. (Then again, probably the only way to hold a "green" convention is to do it entirely over the Internet.)

These and the other photos were taken at the Democratic convention near the Pepsi Center. When you have tens of thousands of people, huge mounds of trash are inevitable.

Room keys made of wood? What the heck... 10 years ago it was 'stop using paper grocery bags--they cause forests to disappear and increase CO2' now we have room keys made of wood to prevent using plastic. I find it hilarious when any group of people claim to know all about how something will impact us only to end up swinging back and forth like a pendulum.

I completely agree. I've been discussing this for some time now. Lets not forget about compact fluorescent bulbs that contain hazerdous cehmicals, create more waste then traditional light bulbs because they don't last as long, and emit a higher emf. I'm all for a cleaner and healthier environment but i'm not for arrogant environmentalists going to extremes based on what the latest fad is. Lets bring back brown paper bags, at least thats a biodegradable RENEWABLE resource.

As was aptly pointed out in the story;

"But whopping huge mounds of trash remain unavoidable--and the presence of idling SUVs--show that the concept remains more of a slogan than reality."

Thats the whole story of the Democratic Party, and more-so for the idiot liberals who have taken it upon themselves to mandate how the rest of us live our lives. Long on slogans and bumper-stickers, very short on substance.

I think it would be more appropriate to say, the concept remains more a hypocrisy, than a reality.

The greenest in history? What about the 1800's - where everyone got their by horse and they didn't have 300spotlights, and 7000 SUV's carrying people around...no doubt it was hard to enforce...hahaha Keith Olbermann eat your heart out!! I love the left!!

Extremely *VALID* point!!!!!

Just goes to show the ignorance of some people and the spin that the MEE-DEE-UHG spinmeisters spit out.... To think that people actually believe what the the MEE-DEE-UHG says is even more scary than any "Party" Convention trash!!!

These liberals are a constant source of amusement. I've quit going to comedy clubs and no longer watch the Comedy channel on TV. I just look for articles by and about liberals and democrats. This green convention thing has had me in stitches since it first came up. I would have liked to see some mauve and chartreuse foods on the menu.

This is so typical of the democrats. The fact that they "said" this would be a green convention is far more important than what they actually did. Let's not let the facts get in the way of a perfectly good coronation

The last photo says it ALL !!! Some disillusioned Gore-dupe VOLUNTEER, SORTING THRU THE GARBAGE WHILE SCUM-BAG SOCIALIST ELITES (Obama, Biden, Hillary, Bill, Kennedy, et cetera ) climb into their IDLING SUV'S, HEAD TO THE AIRPORT & THEN GET ON THEIR PRIVATE JETS & HEAD HOME.
THESE PEOPLE WANT TO RUN THIS COUNTRY.....
THEY WANT MORE TAX DOLLARS OUT OF YOUR POCKET OR YOUR EMPLOYER'S....
Of course, the GREEN DUPES don't have to worry about higher taxes leading to layoffs & foreign-flight of businesses.... MOST OF 'EM DON'T WORK ANYWAY.....
DON'T BLAME US - YOU'RE the ones wearing "green-blinders"....... pitiful slaves ......

pastorneil,

You beat me to it.
It does not matter if they left piles of trash and belched tons of "CO2" gas into the atmosphere. They MEANT well. They had GOOD intentions. We should all feel good about them. Style over substance. It's the dems way.

Ok. Now Declan, how about some photos from around the Denver Broncos' stadium? How much green trash was left by the earth loving liberals following Obama's speech?

If these people are all about going green and natural, then why are they so against naturally produced oil, coal and gas? And, if oil and coal are so dangerous to the planet, then should we not get it out of the ground and destroy it?

How can the earth create something that will destroy itself? IDIOTS.

It's OK. The wooden keys were from trees in Canada trucked down here with diesel trucks. It's like buying our oil from Russia or Saudi, it's OK as long as its not here

I say we all hire these guys for the next 4 years. They know how to put on a show. Maybe these garbage sorting jobs are the type of jobs Mr. Obama plans to hook us up with. I cracked up last nigh listening when I heard them screaming they would give tax breaks to companies who keep jobs in America. HA! Ask yourself which president was in office when this massive exodus of jobs was in its' infancy. Dems are full of protectionsit (is that a word? I like it) ideas about saving me from myself and my planet from me. Gosh is must be awesome to be so damn inlightened. I'm going to go out right now and find me some Dems to be friends with. Seems like I can learn a lot from them. I better hurry along now.

I love the Green Democrats, with their idling limo's.

Sheryl Crow played here (Bend, OR) last night, having arrived by private jet after playing at the Obama coronation.... Wasn't it Crow who insisted on using one square of toilet paper to save the planet?

Perhaps her jet runs on the hot air produced in Denver

Isn't that something? One toilet paper square. I'll tell you what, this may explain why Sheryl Crow never married....she's bound to be malodorous if she's using only one square per sit, not a good way to attract a man.

Also, if I have to take out a couple of more trees over my lifetime to keep a clean hinee, that's a risk I'm willing to take.
I'm really more intelligent than these comments let on, but one stupid statement (Crow's) deserves another.

Going green provides you with the smug, self-satisfaction of being better than other people. You can wallow in sanctimonious piety looking down your nose at non-believers trying to live their petty lives.

And that, my friend, helps the environment big time.
