iPhone Dev Team releases 2.2 jailbreak
An unlocked iPhone 3G appears to be closer to reality.
Just two days after Apple released its iPhone 2.2 update, the iPhone Dev Team has released a so-called jailbreak of the firmware.

An easy way of unlocking your iPhone 3G could hit the Internet relatively soon.
(Credit: CNET)The team of hackers on Saturday posted to its blog QuickPwn for 2.2 and PwnageTool for 2.2 for Windows and Macintosh machines, along with instructions on how enable iPhone 3Gs with the 2.2 firmware to accept third-party applications.
The blog also includes a word of caution about baseband, the chip that controls the connection between the phone and the mobile-phone network:
Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes, the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 2.2 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband. This could be bad for certain people, depending on your ultimate aim.
The iPhone Dev Team is still working to unlock the iPhone 3G, but it has proven a tough nut to crack, mostly because of the baseband technology. You can unlock your iPhone 3G to use it on another carrier by modifying the SIM card, but what the iPhone Dev Team is trying to accomplish is a software-based unlock that you would just download and install.

I'll take an Android phone.
Hype is not substance.
You have a contract with AT&T to have service for 2yrs, but nothing that says you can't use another carrier along side it. They can only control what devices and users are on their network. If you had and switch to T-Mobile, AT&T can't do anything.
You have a "contract" with Apple when you buy the phone for a limited warranty, which can be voided by the hacking. But Apple can't restrict your ability to keep the phone (can disable it by software) by modification, just like Ford couldn't take your car away for adding window tint or something.
You said that probably because you never seen the software you can install after jailbroken, Only the single software which creates folders and let you dump 16 into one folder is worth the jailbreaking work !
1: Podcasts download from the phone: Yay, it's in this update!
2: Use as emergency internet conenction for may laptop: Possible with this update but I'm sure that the telcos will make you pay more for the service.
3: Synch songs and media with multiple PCs: Will probably never happen 8(
any major issues. i came to know on 2.2 update and thought of upgrading it to 2.2. after updating it, i
came to know jailbroken app's are gone and my vista mobile themes are gone. anyway, still i thought
let's use it for some time. 2nd day, my settings disappeared. 3rd day my clock disappeared. 4th day lot
of other applications are missing. while im writing it, im restoring my iphone 3g to factory settings.
i was wondering why the settings kind of applications are missing, which came with iphone by default.
most pathetic thing is, for the last 2 days whenever i rebooted my iphone it's now asking for PUK code.
I got once long time back and now i give that code each time i restart my iphone. i dont know. these
Apple fools boke my working iphone.
apple morons were bashing Windows Vista OS. They dont have any moral responsibility to tell people
their OS is better than Vista. they dont have the capability to fix any existing issues and each and
every update creates lot of issues. now they should realize that if a OS is used by people they their
OS will also get issues.
oops. after restore, it allows me only emergency calls in multiple languages and not even connecting to
apple.
this is my first and last time i'm using a Apple product. I'm totally dissatisfied on Apple. Even i was
thinking of using the rumored touch laptop, but, def. i'll not go for even macbook air which has same
OS i think which's in iphone.
Now, since it's not getting inside, i tried to reboot and now it shows up in itunes and the backup i've taken (the jailbroken 2.1 update) is showing up. i'm restoring it now. let me know whether atleast it works.
You buy a perfectly good product, open the hood and fiddle with it, then blame the manufacturer for your own stupidity! The only moron in your story appears to be you. If you hadn't jailbroken it in the first place, it would still be working fine now... mine is! silly, silly boy. I'm sure apple are breathing a sigh of relief that you are not going to be buying any more of their products; you sound like a complete pain. Oh, and regarding Vista?... XP was 10 times better!! and that was a pile of ****!!!
1) Free applications FROM the app store...
2) Customization, I want my iphone to look different from everyone elses
3) PDA Net allows to tether my internet to my computer
4) Make the phone think that it is always on wifi so you can use skype over the 3g network.
5) Video Camera
Those are only 5 reasons. I'll probably rejailbreak with the 2.2 later, i already have so many applications that i dont feel like starting over.
