Zune phone concept: Hot or not?

Design concept for Zune mobile phone.

Is Yanko's concept design for a Zune smartphone intriguing, or frightening?

(Credit: Yanko Design)

It's a fake, folks. The "Zune Contact" phone dreamed up by Adam Huffman from Yanko Design is pure fantasy, and it's not the first.

If you like what you see, don't hold your breath. With the Zune brand still recuperating from its awkward first attempt to unseat Apple's iPod, the chances of Microsoft developing a new phone under the Zune umbrella seems unlikely. Still, it's fun to think about, if only to guess at the countless ways it would likely flop in the face of the iPhone.

Then again, with all the iPhone headaches people are experiencing these days, maybe a smartphone newcomer would be just the thing to stir things up. God knows the touch-screen iPhone clones spewing out from all the usual places aren't quite up for the challenge.

So what do you say? Would Zune's hypothetical phone suffer the same fate as its MP3 player, or is the company that brought you the Xbox 360 the perfect manufacturer to humble the iPhone?

This design looks really stupid for a phone. If Microsoft wants to make a phone (hardware and OS) they should look to model it after the X-Box 360 and not the Zune. Just my 2 cents.

@doughboy

this is only a fan-made picture of what (s)he wants, not anything from Microsoft

If it worked 80% as well as iphone, and was available on carriers besides AT&T, like VERIZON-DUH!!! it would sell like hotcakes.

i like the one from ZuneScene a lot better. What is the white thing at the bottom of it, that throws it off a bit and the buttons at the side sticks out to much. I like the back and 5mp cam though. To be honest if microsoft was to come out with a Zunephone i think it would give the iphone a run for its money if its not a lock phone, especially if it looks like the Zunescene pics. I think the iPhone does well because it looks good. The Zune didn't sell because it is ugly. Why would one introduce a product in the color brown? Black, white, chrome, brushed aluminum all would have done better than brown. There are other phones that have more functionality than the iPhone and they do okay, but I think it's purely because Apple has a great design team. (BTW I don't own any Apple products but I am tempted.)

Obviously you have not seen or used the Zune 80. Everyone other than an Apple fanboi like this one. With Zune originals you make it your own. Stylized art on back and your own uniqued persona etched in. The thing is just beautiful.
And through all this posturing and spin the Apple Iphone is still the number 3 smartphone in the US market, well behind leader Nokia and LG. On top of that Iphone cant seem to get even phone calls right.

All I'm gonna say is IF it sounds as good as the Zune, DOESN'T have a standard HP connection, and they give me a FRIGGIN' EQ, I'd get it!!!

If they'd make a Zune phone with wi-fi, built-in gps, and make if for Verizon instead of AT&T, I would SOOOO get one!

before making a zune phone, microsoft should concentrate on the zune brand and make it a capable enough player against the ipod.

I would purchase one of these things in a heartbeat. Microsoft should sell the ?Zune Cell? unlocked with 120 gig storage and price it a little bit lower than the Iphone?s paltry 15 gig capacity to compete. Also, they should also include a detachable keyboard as the Iphone's keyboard is lousy. Imagine for a moment if you could beam Word docs, PPT presentations, Excel docs, Mp3's, photos to other business users? It would be boon for T-Mobile to have a phone like this as their phones are arguably very mediocre. Personally, as a creative professional, I think this mockup looks better than the over hyped Iphone. I would love to be a beta tester for this device. Microsoft, you need a better marketing and product development strategy. This is coming from a person who uses both Mac and PC platforms.

I really like the large lowercase letters of the zune. Makes it feel so refreshing. But I don't think it would work that well for a phone. What about applications? Do they also show in a list? Microsoft could take on Apple if it brought a similar multitouch phone, without Windows Mobile, and fills in all the sms/video recording issues that the iPhone has.

If WM is any indication of how there phone will be, I'd say heck no. But if then really reworked the underlining OS and paired it with good Hardware, I'd consider buying one.

I think that a Zune Phone from Microsoft is a great idea. It might be just the external forcing Apple needs to get their **** together and make an iPhone that has a removable battery and can send a picture message. These are things that I'm sure Microsoft would do because it is in their culture to appeal to the whole rather than the few, as Apple does. Until the iPhone can do everything my Samsung A707 can do, Apple wont be getting any iPhone revenue from me.

IF Microsoft had a Zune phone, or maybe a 360 phone, it'd have to make up ground where the iPhone lost it. 1) REAL GPS, none of that assisted crap. 2) MMS! Everyone wants to send a picture message without having to go through e-mail. 3) Business e-mail in the first iteration, so there's no 'Zune Phone 2.0' to wait for. 4) Landscape keyboard given throughout the functions, just like the Samsung Instinct. 5) Haptic feedback. It's a function on nearly every iPhone competitor, so doing it would make sense. 6) Since it's more of a Windows device, put in the latest version of Windows Mobile. 7) WIRELESS-N. That's right, you heard me. Put in an a/b/g/n card and this thing would be future proofed, especially for streaming any video on an N-network. 8) Expandable memory, PLUS internal flash that maxes out at 32GB. Granted, most people don't know what to do with 32GB AND even more than that with cards, but it'd be a great feature with filehoarders. 9) 3.2MP, or greater, camera with flash AND self-portrait mirror. 10) Have games, and not just any games, classic games like Snake, Space Invaders, Pac-man, maybe Mario and/or Sonic, and this thing would beat any iPhone's crack at games on a mobile phone platform. 11) Stereo Bluetooth out the gate. 12) PRICE CUT WITH A 2-YEAR AGREEMENT!! That was the most horrible part about the first, and maybe even 2nd iPhones: the price wasn't hitting any sweet spots for phone buyers: $100 or less. 13) Availability with CDMA carriers like Verizon and Sprint. If nearly half of the cell phone populous has Verizon, and just over ten percent has Sprint, then it'll make sense to go after that market and especially for the use of their well established 3G services like SprintTV or Verizon TV. 14) Bluetooth tethering for a laptop. 15) Unrecessed 3.5mm headphone jack in the 1st iteration, as well as it coming WITH a 2.5mm adapter. 16) WIDE codec support of nearly ever available kind of video, music, and pictures. 17) Integration with not only its own software, like iPhone to iTunes or Treos to Palm, but also integration with Outlook and Windows Media Player. 18) User-removable battery for the installation of an extended battery. 18) 3G usage, if I didn't already clearly mention it. 19) Seamless integration with the Xbox 360. 20) And finally: video recording. Why WOULDN'T you have it?

I really hope someone from Microsoft takes a look at this so they don't make the same mistakes the iPhone did. Tell me what you guys think by replying to this comment. Thanks a bunch.

Why don't they just integrate the Zune media player into WM 6.2 or WM 7? WM already does several things as good or better than the iPhone. One of the few areas where WM is behind is in its media player.

Please. There is absolutely zero percent chance that there will EVER be a cell phone product built by Microsoft. It is pretty much an unwritten law that you don't compete with the people you are selling operating system software to.

End of story, forever.

And yet, the Zune exists, in direct competition with PlaysForSure. Microsoft has demonstrated repeatedly that *Microsoft's* market share is far more important than any business partner's. If they see an opportunity to get more market, they will, even if it means shooting business partners in the back to do it.

I think they (MS) is going to have to come out with something... But I think more they need to change the Mobile windows. Maybe a more cut down version to work on these types of screens. The thing is the phone really isn't that big of deal now days (hardware side). A lot of phones are the same as the iphone! The key is the software that runs it.
What I thought MS might finally do is get into the hand held market! (With PSP and Nintendo DS)

So take some smaller games that can play Xbox live Arcade Games, take the music from the Zune, and take the OS from Mobile Windows. Make it about the same size as an iphone (maybe a little longer but thinner) you have yourself a winning phone.

MS already said they weren't going to make a zune phone... they already have windows mobile, it would be pointless..

I just don't get it... Why would anyone really, truly want a Zune phone...? Microsoft already has a cell platform on the market and it already supports all the features needed for being a cool all around phone. While the Zune interface is ok, there's not much in the way of a point in reinventing the wheel. HTC and Samsung have done a pretty good job of modifying the basic WM 6.1 interface that give it a lot of that iPhone kinda feel while maintaining originality - all while NOT having the iPhone's limitations. Ok.. So some of HTC's phones aren't as "kewl" looking as the jesus phone. But it's just as, if not more functional...

Also, WM has never blocked apps, you can get them pretty much anywhere - not just Apple's store.

Could WM be better? Of course. And it likely will be in the next release.

At any rate... I don't really see much point in having a Zune phone. It's bad enough you have to pay through the nose for phone service, and to have to pay a subscription fee on top of that seems a bit silly...
