Zune 3 coming in '09

Looks like the first and second generations of the Zune will have to wait until the end of 2009 for a new member of the family.

In an announcement that will surely test the patience of Zune fans, European newspaper GNT has quoted Microsoft France's Francois Ruault as saying the third generation of the Zune MP3 player will likely have a worldwide release during the holiday season of 2009. While folks in the European Union are probably happy to hear they'll be getting the Zune at all, the rest of us have just glimpsed a long wait for a Zune 3 hardware refresh.

The article goes on to hint that Microsoft's Zune Marketplace digital music download service will eventually be rolled into the Windows Mobile platform. While knee-jerk speculation points to the Zune's iPhone-like ascent into a mobile phone, more than likely this is just Microsoft adjusting to the partnerships companies like Rhapsody and Napster have struck with mobile carriers over the past year.

Oh, my god, they refuse to let it die
by TheSmellyMoa March 13, 2008 2:00 PM PDT
The latest survey numbers had Zune at around 1%, probably less of market share. It's beyond embarrassing. This is like having to watch a dog eating its own vomit.

Don't let it die - just have firesales every year

No, don't let it die. I got a 30 Gig unit for $80 last year - it's probably the BEST purchase I made last year. The thing is great (if you're not a slave to i-crap). Ok, so the software sucks, but I'm willing to live with it as long as I can pick up these things at less than 1/2 retail.

That's the funniest thing I heard all day, and I'm a Windows fan. Thanks dude, I'll have to use that one.
Maybe it will suck 1/3 less than the iPod.

I am a Windows Media Player user. I bought a Zune and to my surprise I love the device...the Zune Software is horrid.

Zune v2 HDD models
by crustycracker March 13, 2008 4:04 PM PDT
I had my Zune for nearly a month and LOVED it, but there are two definite drawbacks to the device itself...

1.their implementation of "on the go" playlists was horrible. If you're giving me on the go playlists, and I'm playing it... if I add songs to my playlists, for god's sake, don't make me restart the playlist for those songs to play. Better yet, let me delete songs and re-order it as my Creative Zen did.

2. Battery life. What more can I say? My battery would not last more than 10 hours and would randomly drain completely between listening sessions despite pausing music and putting the player in standby. I know I am not the rule, but if you read Zune.net you will see a significant number of users are having these issues. (yes, the wireless was off and the backlighting was set as low as possible)

Overall, the second generation interface kills the iPod, but the quality issues killed the Zune v2.

Oh yes, the software was also horrid... nearly as bad as iTunes imho. They should have just let it sync with WMP.

it needs to be better than ipod hands down
by cbaisa March 13, 2008 6:44 PM PDT
If the next gen Zune is better than the next gen ipods I will buy one. Microsoft has to have a device that can do everything the ipod touch can, do it better, and do more besides or it will not ever gain a significant marketshare. As a consumer I have no reason to switch unless a product is superior where it counts.

Ipod touch advantages for me: wi-fi, safari to go with it, touch screen

Now Microsoft needs all of this and more or i see no reason to switch. Although I'll probably have a cell/mp3/internet/smartphone convergence device by then anyway so it won't matter to me.

Why do Apple fanboys hate on Zune?...
by Rod Roddy March 13, 2008 7:42 PM PDT
Well,...they're fanboys--or girls. The ipod touch was such an uninspired design, that it makes absolutley no sense to by one if you already have an iphone--and we all know that some Apple die hards have both devices.

Also, touch screens suck--at least at this point in time they do. And why the hell would I want a browser on my "supposed" mp3 player? that's what my computer is for. I want to listen to my music and watch some video podcasts from time to time THATS IT.

I also refuse to be a fanboy for any one company, my mp3 player which I wont even drop a brand name, is just fine and it does what it was meant to do. Hey, there goes Steve Jobs laughing all the way to the bank!

Software sucks
by C433Z March 13, 2008 9:46 PM PDT
I own the 1st gen, fatty zune. I hate both iterations of their zune software. Just make it work with freakin media player please.

The second version of the zune didn't appeal to me at all. Slightly larger screen, touch pad, big whoop. it's a good deal thinner, but hey, if i wanted thin i would've gotten an ipod.

like someone else said, for me to consider buying the next one, it better be way freaking awesome.

My wishlist: $250, 3.5" 640x480 screen, bluetooth, wifi, 160gb or more, good battery life, .5" thick or less, support more formats, drop zune software.

obviously this won't happen but, still. i really like the zune UI, and 3" is just big enough to watch videos on for me. that's why i won't get an ipod.

anti iPod rant
by b_baggins March 14, 2008 6:46 AM PDT
it's so funny to hear Apple haters rant against the iPod touch. My personal
favorite is that touch screens don't work. They don't work for your garbage
plastic screen window mobile device, but they work great for a device with
optical glass like the iPhone. As far as browsing the web? It's a great feature.
Browse the news while listening to some music at starbucks. Best of all
worlds and I don't have to lug around a laptop to do it. Btw, this talkback was
written on my iPod Touch.

Ditto on the Zune software!
by CraveUser March 14, 2008 1:34 PM PDT
I agree with C433Z. The Zune software is one of the worst I've ever seen. IMO the device itself is actually good aside from its susceptibility to static electricity. I have complained in Zune.net but they can only handle positive re-enforcement there if they read it. Problem is the software is bad and there is no going around it. My main rant is that sooner or later the Zune software likes to monopolize the CPU (100% CPU utilization) even when not doing anything. The other one is its insistance to repaint itself on top of the active window while it's in the background, so all of a sudden your Excel spreadsheet assumes the Zune background. It's just software that was badly written and badly tested plain and simple. I hope they patch the current software release really really soon otherwise I will have to give up on the Zune folks.

by evan21293 March 14, 2008 4:23 PM PDT
This is just what microsoft does they release a subpar product then instead of
making better or sticking with it they start talking about what is coming out.
They're doing the same things with windows Vista sucked so now they are
talking about Windows seven they need to be fixing vista not saying just wait till
the next version

Who cares? The software is crap!

I regret to say I owned a 80GB Zune. I owned an iPod before getting it and decided on the Zune because of the feature set, subscription music service, and nice screen. Everything was great when the device played but my music from the subscription service caused the player to keep resetting and I had to talk with support for more than 3 hours to figure out how to get it working again. Now it keeps saying contact support and freezes when you reset the device. I threw it in the trash and am fed up with the device. I WILL NEVER BUY THE ZUNE AGAIN!!!

I pod sound quality is garbage, enough said
by Composer_1777 March 15, 2008 11:54 PM PDT
First of all the Zune is horrible, so is i pod sound quality. Apple fan boys sorry to tell u this, but get some music education and learn about sound quality: the thing an mp3 player is supposed to be for in the first place.

The I phone is not practical, its too big; with pointless features just to hook in all the trendies. Why would i want to browse the web on some 4 inch screen, why would i want to watch videos on a 4 inch screen why would i want to carry around something that can't fit in my pocket, hello cassette player on crack.

people who sit around at starbucks r lame, drink something healthy , try water.

Wow, is all I have to say. The only reason people like i-pods is because they are "in." The ipod user interface blows my ****, and itunes + the store suck more than j leno on late night. And for all you ipod haters saying the zune software blows, HA! It is by far the best provided library viewer for a company and works in perfect sync with my computer. Zune kicks the **** out of ipod, and will continue to do so, FOREVER!

idk i have an Itouch and it is very cool and i love surfing the web. but I hate the fact it cannot play so many basic forms of videos. it sucks big time. ITunes is the weak link when it comes to my ITouch. everything about it is awesome except getting it on there is tedious and painful. I hope microsoft can put out a product that isnt so narrow minded as steve jobs and his ITouch

As a consmuer that has been purchasing MP3 players from various manufacturers over the past 10 years i have to say that the 80gb Zune is by far my favorite. I do not understand why people are having issues with the software. Perhaps you should look at what you are downloading to your harddrive (i have Vista Premium and again no issues in the year i have had it). My 80GB Zune runs and plays so well my wife wanted to give her Sansa to our daughter. I bought my wife a pink 8GB zune as she does not watch movies on her player, again no issues at all. Both of the zunes are connected to my laptop and my childrens other (3 none zune) MP3 players are also connected to it. I love the 80GB screen as it allows me to watch movies while on the road and i have the dock to connect to whatever hotel TV we are watching. I have over 40 movies on my Zune and more than 3000 songs and 800 photos. It's a perfect entertainment travelling companion. On a rececnt trip to see the grandparents i hooked it up to their TV and they got to watch their Grandkids photos as well as some movies they had not seen...its s good product, just be sure to watch what you put on your computer as many times its a conflict between some crapware youve downloaded from gnutella or Limewire....or some other P2P/torrent site.
