iPhone 3G: What we didn't get

Did the iPhone 3G meet your expectations?

(Credit: Apple)

Our long national nightmare is over. Finally Steve Jobs saw it fit to announce to the world the existence of the iPhone 3G, and it does indeed have quite a few improvements over the current iteration--3G is huge, of course, GPS is a welcome addition, and third-party applications are nothing to be sneezed at. Not to mention it's slightly thicker at 4.5 inches by 2.4 inches by 0.48 inch, has a black plastic back, a flush headphone jack, and just got a huge price cut (the 8GB will retail for $199 while the 16GB will retail for $299).

But we were expecting a lot more than what Jobs announced. Here's a short list of what we wanted from the second-gen iPhone, but just didn't get.

  • Multimedia messaging - Almost every other cell phone in the market has the ability to send images to other cell phones via multimedia messaging, or MMS. Yes you can still e-mail those photos, but MMS is such a basic feature that it should've been in the iPhone from the start.
  • Copy and paste - Again, this is such a basic feature. Having copy and paste makes it easier to type out text messages and e-mails.
  • Video recording - In the world of mobile video, Qik, and YouTube, it's a shame the iPhone doesn't have video-recording capabilities. Yes the quality wouldn't be that great, but it should be an option anyway.
  • Voice command - For a touch-screen phone, we think voice command and voice dialing would've been a great feature add-on for the iPhone. Perhaps this will be added via a third-party app, but we would really prefer this to be a native setting.
  • Bluetooth flexibility - Right now, all you can use Bluetooth on the iPhone for are headset voice calls, and that's it. This is sufficient for most people, sure, but we would like for Apple and AT&T to open up the Bluetooth profiles for the iPhone. This means we would like stereo Bluetooth and A2DP for streaming music wirelessly, Bluetooth tethering so we can use the iPhone as a modem, and finally we would like to have Bluetooth file-transfer protocol so we can transfer files to and fro the iPhone.

These are just a few omissions we could think of. Did the iPhone 3G meet your expectations, or would you rather it have a few more features? Let us know in the comments!

The new Iphone is great and is finally coming to Canada, but the app store sucks, especially compared to the Installer App already on Ipod Touch and Iphone. I got NES, SNES, GBA, a program that lets me download youtube video and more already on my ipod, nothing in the app store beats that.

yes sarb, but hose are also 3rd party if i'm not mistaken, on most likely a jailbroken ipod or iphone. Apple was sick of jailbroken ipods and iphones so they made the app store.

Voice commands and A2DP were a MUST on my list. Will definitely think twice about buying next gen.

The simple missing application on the new iPhone is a Blackberry client. Exchange is cute but executives have been trained and it is a difficult and expensive job. A real Blackberry client that fully connects to the Blackberry servers that already occupy spots in Corporate Data Centers would do more to facilitate corporate acceptance than even Exchange, because of limited penetration of push email by Exchange.

WEAK! I can't believe they didn't include a 32gb model at launch....Was excited for 3g version, but won't touch it till it's at least 32gb

What are you doing that you need that much room. If you are doing business related items then you really don't need that much room. Especially when you will probably have mobile me to push the large files to your other devices. I have a friend that had an extreme amount of songs and pics on his 1st gen 8G and he could have had you looking at pics for hours, he just filled that 8G of his.

haha the iPhone still isn't a phone!! lol sucks for you! Here, i'll send u a pic of me rocking it out on my Windows Mobile phone. Oh, wait, u have a iPhone, thats right, you cant do multimedia mssging. Ouch, how else did Jobs screw you over??

True, but why choose a Windows Phone over a BlackBerry? Might as well choose an iPhone.
by o2bpitching June 10, 2008 4:20 PM PDT
Way to show some brains. At least our OS and programs WORK and at least our CEO is not a cave man in a suit.

I'm sorry, but Windows Mobile sucks. I hate having an alarm set, then leaving my phone off for a few days and turning it back on just to be hit with a barrage of alarms.
There are so many flaws with the Windows Mobile software...too many to list really. iPhone OS is so much better in every way.
by mistermann June 15, 2008 2:40 PM PDT
You are obviously one of the bigger idiots out there if you are using Windows anything. You are most definitely not worth having a discussion with if you were not even smart enough to not purchase a Windows crap phone. ho hum.
by apereymer June 9, 2008 1:29 PM PDT
Ok, so we didn't get lots of those "extra" features. But hey, lets look at the bright side. We got a fast 3G phone, with wonderful 3rd party apps, and what can match the major price cut? I also like that "white" color... I guess I am getting the white one....

Also think of this: Imagine all of the features on the "wish list" would have been included, then we would not have anything to wish for in the next version (ok ok... we always have things to wish for....)

The price cut is an illusion - the money will be spent on apps. Before you got 399 deal but relatively easy to jailbrake and add all those features that matter for free!
by bdezi1 June 9, 2008 1:38 PM PDT
is there an application for voice recording? Seems like that would be a simple "voice memo minder" or something like that.

Yes, third party apps. 'Audio Recorder' and 'QuickVoice Recorder', among others. Decent, but simplistic compared to Palm and MobilePC apps. Third party apps are doing a great job in upgrading their software with additional features in response to requestsfrom users.
by muranyum June 9, 2008 1:41 PM PDT
It failed to impress me. I don't see any major difference at hardware except for the 3G and GPS support and frankly, I don't care about having 3G or GPS on my phone because they are the last two features I want to have. I mean, those guys can put all those things into that device but they can't update the software so that the phone supports MMS and copy/paste?.. Weird!

I'm with you buddy. I bought the original iPhone and was ready to buy this new one until I found out they still refuse to give us MMS. Now, no way will I buy it.
by wantzep June 10, 2008 4:18 AM PDT
Why do you need MMS!!! Come on. Get real.
by enter1only June 10, 2008 7:02 AM PDT
it's a must. so basic. wont buy until weare memory and MMS

Apparently, the next iPod Touch will just have 3rd party apps like the new iPhone and nothing more. Too bad. Next generation iPods will most likely be another disappointment.

Alright....we didn't get video recording or Voice Dialing, but I think it'll a software update later on. I know Apple has something in the works. So all you Windows Mobile users pounding on the missed capabilities, the iPhone is MUCH more advanced then your devices. And it's ahead of tis time. Windows mobile has a tired look and the iPhone brought a FRESH perspective on how a mobile device should work.

If the iPhone is how a mobile device should work, then how come it doesn't have the features of the other existing mobile devices?
by DrtyDogg June 9, 2008 2:51 PM PDT
That is what was said so much when the first on lauched. Look back at the C|Net comments. It was quite funny seeing people say, "I just got my iPhone I love it, I can't wait until the next update when they add _____(insert feature here)." If it's so much more advanced why are you looking forward to an update to a yet to be released product.
by tekwiz4u June 9, 2008 3:55 PM PDT
Well Drty....If you want more features on a phone, 90 percent of the time you will have to BUY a new phone, as compared to the iPhone, which is solely software driven. So an soft update does it good then buy new hardware.
by cervante1 June 10, 2008 1:22 AM PDT
Huh? Where is the logic in that comment?
"90 percent of the time you will have to BUY a new phone, as compared to the iPhone, which is solely software driven"
So you don't BUY the new I-phone?
by soccer18 June 9, 2008 1:53 PM PDT
Is it just me or did apple make a big design mistake by switching to a plastic back? Their entire product line is moving towards aluminum/stainless steel, why would they suddenly revert to plastic, especially when the original iPhone looked so good and was incredibly durable? (I can't say I'm a fan of the rounded back either....)
Reply to this comment
by lawgone June 9, 2008 6:00 PM PDT
I agree. The 1st gen backing is sexy, sturdy and doesn't scratch. Rounded plastic is, for lack of a better word, g@y. Also, why make the 16GB white? Usually, in Apple land the upgraded version of something gets the black color treatment. I'd like the additional storage but I'm a man - I don't want to carry a white phone around!
by Guchmyster June 10, 2008 3:28 PM PDT
I agree, who thought the metal back was easy to scratch... I can't wait to see all the terrible looking iPhone in the near future.
by geminisalsero June 9, 2008 1:55 PM PDT
Here is my prediction guys - this is not the fully 2nd generation iphone - but a 1.5 (similar to ipod 5.5 update) Iphone Pro (32 Gb) will hit early next year in addition to these other models. 8Gb 199, 16bg 299 and 32gb for 399. Also if you notice, ipod Touch 8gb is still 299 - so most likely when school term approaches a 64bg version will appear. Apple wants to sell - a key strategy is to ommit wanted feature for future products - just to keep you wanting it more. (watch this comment be deleted by apple bureacracy soon)

NIce strategy. I'll buy a windows based unit before then. I'M sure I'm not the only one tired of waiting.
by Guchmyster June 10, 2008 3:33 PM PDT
I agree with eneter1only, I'm going the Nseries route myself. I've got an ipod touch and like it well enough for media but the windows mobile platforms are more usable in real life environments. I would however consider a new ipod touch with more memory if it came with flexible bluetooth, etc. for file transferring/sharing/uploading.

3G - nice; GPS is nice too - BUT COME ON APPLE - let's get some of basic's in. I was pumped to get this phone, but no video capture, keeping the 2.0 mpix camera is lame, and no pictures in MMS is pathetic. I'm going to the LG VU. I'll get all of that and Moblie TV.

Please get a proper camera if you want to take still pics and video. Why are you using a crappy phone camera for that.
by DrtyDogg June 10, 2008 9:36 AM PDT
Not all phone cameras are crappy.
by Daniel Chow June 9, 2008 1:59 PM PDT
i'm skeptical about our perceived need for MMS. remember the floppy disk? when apple did away with it with the introduction of the first iMac, we worried how are we going to deal with the lack of a floppy disk. after all, all computers have a floppy disk, and we exchange files between computers using a floppy disk. albeit not ideally. then came the USB thumb drives, and the floppy disk is mostly forgotten.

today, we use MMS because, well, every other pre-iphone does it. it's not ideal but it's used because it's "there". perhaps MMS is an aging format like floppy disk that we think is the ideal way to share images, but there we haven't realize a better way yet.

I respectfully but vehemently disagree Daniel. MMS is like instant messaging while email requires you to continually "check it." It's hard to have an instant conversation via email unless you keep hitting refresh and who wants to do that? 95% of the people on this planet use MMS to send messages with media over their phone. Apple is behaving like a gas station that no longer sells gas and only sells hydrogen or ethanol - PERHAPS those are the future but you have to provide the service that people use NOW!
by enter1only June 10, 2008 7:09 AM PDT
Thats a croc. You must not have many friends. So do we just not communicate until a technology falls by the wayside? Did you not use a landline all those years while you were waiting for cell phones to be developed???
by b_baggins June 10, 2008 8:23 AM PDT
You are right. With push mail for the rest of us and push notification coming in September, mms will become rapidly obsolete. iPhone users will be asking their other phone using friends: What do you mean your email just doesn't tell you when you have a new message, and you CAN'T run a real instant message application?!?
by DrtyDogg June 10, 2008 9:17 AM PDT
b_baggins: "What do you mean your email just doesn't tell you when you have a new message, and you CAN'T run a real instant message application?!?" Something WinMo users have been asking their friends with an iPHONE for a year now.
by Guchmyster June 10, 2008 3:39 PM PDT
Ha, ha, ha! This is great... Let's be honest it, the iPhone, should have both MMS and the email standard... It's not like it would have been hard to incorporate. Apple doesn't listen to it's consumers like EVERY of manufacturer does! Apple does what it wants and then says you should be stoked about it... it makes me laugh in a sad, sad, way.

3G, GPS, and a plastic case are all we get after a year. Honestly why did they bother, with everyone else going touch screen they really needed to step up by including the features they missed on the initial launch. How about a decent camera, a flash, and support for multimedia messaging! All Jobs is trying to do here is pander to the low cost phone and ipod customers to further their market share and if that's the business model they want to go after fine but how about giving the loyal customers a high end version with all the features they deserve in a smart phone.

It's actually $15 more per month. The $20 per month 1st gen iPhone data plan included 200 SMS messages per month. The new $30 3G data plan does not. You must pay an extra $5 per month to get the same 200 SMS messages.

So, the new iPhones are more expensive if you calculate the extra $10 or $15 per month that you will pay for the 2 years of your contract!
by tekwiz4u June 9, 2008 2:12 PM PDT
Lol...people are forgetting the iPhone IS JUST A PHONE, not a full power iMac. Dont expect it to do EVERYTHING. And for the record, the iPhone is the innovator in how a touch screen SHOULD work. Now LG and Samsung are copying this model after missing the boat. And I believe that we will get more capabilites in software updates. It's just a matter of time.

That is funny, I don't think I've ever seen the Iphone marketed for it's call quality! It's a smartphone/convergence device and the only reason Apple isn't packing more features in is because they decided go for price. The Iphone was an innovator, last year, but now everyone is starting to copy it because that's what happens in the mobile phone market. Remember the Razr? It was innovative when it was released and now Motorolla is struggling to sell a mobile phone. That's exactly what will happen with Apple if they don't continue to raise the bar.
by DrtyDogg June 9, 2008 2:56 PM PDT
"And I believe that we will get more capabilites in software updates. It's just a matter of time. " That's what the fanboys said last year when their Jesus phone failed to meet their expectations.
by tekwiz4u June 9, 2008 3:58 PM PDT
Mdiller....Apple IS the bar raiser in this market. Look at LG and Samsung scrambling to bring us copycat touchscreen products.
by lawgone June 9, 2008 6:10 PM PDT
DrtyDogg is right...we all thought we'd have the software or firmware update with MMS in it. Look how that went.
by Guchmyster June 10, 2008 3:43 PM PDT
The iPod touch is a great iPod/media device and it shares the exact same interface as the iPhone, but the iPhone is not the most spectacular phone... not by a long shot. I think the other commenters are correct, look at all the great software updates that came out the first year :-(
by tekwiz4u June 10, 2008 4:12 PM PDT
^ ^ probably doesn't have MMS, right? Who cares about that.
by koala72 June 11, 2008 12:22 AM PDT
Yeah you are just sooo riiight, its just a phone, so why should it have copy and paste, mms and related things like that? They require so much processing power and only 99% of phones released these days have it.
And all phones have had it for years.
by iforeigner June 9, 2008 2:15 PM PDT
Have you noticed that your whishing list can be fully satisfied (with tons of bits and pieces to spare) with the HTC Touch Diamond! Apple has always been a con and now finally more and more people are seeing it clearly. The price tag was a last resource to try and keep as many costumers as possible. The iPhone still is a mediocre mobile phone and was very lucky to get away with all the spinning from Mr. Jobs HQ. Get real and get real value for your money by taking it elsewhere.

Please give me a break. HTC Touch is just vaporware.
by coisman June 10, 2008 10:14 PM PDT
I've been disappointed for HTC recently. They've got some powerful hardware acceleration chips but are too damn lazy to make the appropriate software drivers for it, rendering their new line of phones sluggish.
Also, Windows Mobile blows.
by patrick_i June 15, 2008 3:16 PM PDT
Oh, come on now. If it was just a matter of features any number of phones could be deemed better then the iPhone or your precious HTC. The point of the iPhone is not just what it can do, but how easily and well it does what it does. And if you saw the demo's (at WWDC) of some software, there is no other DEVICE that can do what it does. No cell phone, no computer, nothing. Call me a fanboy but at least I'm not being blindly ignorant. P.S. the problem with the American consumer is they have the "Burger King" syndrome.... I HAVE TO HAVE IT MY WAY!!
