Windows users download 1 million copies of Safari

Safari was an early hit with Windows users, who have downloaded 1 million copies of the browser since Monday, according to Apple.

CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the Windows version of the browser as a beta release Monday during his keynote speech at the Worldwide Developers Conference. Safari makes up around 5 percent of the browser market, trailing Internet Explorer and Firefox with its 18.6 million users, a figure Jobs used in his speech Monday.

Cynical colleagues at CNET wonder how many of those downloads were started by hackers and security professionals probing for weaknesses, which is probably a fair point. Nine security vulnerabilities have already been discovered in the Windows beta, and Apple released an updated version of the browser in the wee hours of Thursday morning to plug some of the flaws.

Still, there had to be more than a few downloads from outside the security community. The 1 million copies are of the initial beta release, tagged 3.0.

1 Million Downloads

I'd be willing to wager that a fair number of those downloading from outside the security community were web developers looking to test sites in Safari without buying a whole new computer. Still, there must be _someone_ who downloaded it because they really wanted resizable text fields.

1 Mill copies? On Windows few of them do anything

The number of real users on Windows must be pretty small since
Safri doesn't really work. Most apparent is the fact that many fonts don't work, thus you can't se the text or parts of it. It's a total mess, the apple beta forum is full of angry complaints...
What Apple offers to the public is no beta, but an early ALPHA. Don't jump on it, wait for a major fix.

I was one of the 1 million that downloaded Safari and used it for about 15 minutes and then deleted it. I agree its an alpa release not a beta release.

SHAME ON YOU APPLE!!!!

How dare you Apple to try to lure us Windows users to your supposed Beta of Safari, when it simply does not work. No menu items, no fonts on webpage, nothing to assist with navagation. Simply junk!!! If MAC users had been given this download all H#@$ would have broken loose!!

Go back to the drawing board and when you have something worthwhile then let us know.

nice but ...

... not sure why Apple thought this was worth spending time on. But then, I'm not so sure they DID spend time on it. Needs better support and a more robust help menu. Not to mention a Javascript debugger that users who aren't geeks or software engineers can actually get at. The error console is useless. Apple needs to go back to the drawing-board on this one. And while they're thinking stuff over, how about finally getting rid of those Mac guy/PC guy ads? They were played out a long time ago - now they're just annoying. It's time to move on, Apple.

What font problems?

I think Safari is slower than Firefox, and I miss the Add-Ons, but I haven't
noticed any font problems.

Great post. I recommend Peer Papers for researching. They have over 100,000 term papers and essays available on almost every subject.
