Yahoo's social network is here!

Yahoo's rumored social network, dubbed "Mash," has arrived. The company started inviting people outside the company to test it on Friday, the company says in a blog.

Mash is different from other social networks in that you can start profiles for your friends and "open" your own profile to friends you trust, according to the Mash blog. What that means, exactly, is still a bit unclear. You can also reportedly customize your profile or friends' profiles with other apps, ala Facebook.

"One last note before you jump in: Mash is still pretty raw--there are bugs and we haven't gotten to several of the features it really should have. We need to hear from you about where to focus our efforts," writes Will Aldrich, the head of Mash.

TechCrunch has more details and a screenshot here. "Mash appears to (be) Yahoo's way of saying adieu to its existing social network, Yahoo 360, but no word yet on whether the company will actually be shutting down 360," the post says.

Mash:Will It Make a Splash or End Up In the Trash?
by msavoy September 14, 2007 6:44 PM PDT
Yahoo has been heavily criticized for missing the boat in the social networking sweepstakes, a venue that should have been Yahoo's by default.
Is it too late or has Yahoo in fact benefited by waiting on the sidelines until now? Like Google with its Orkut non-starter, Yahoo hasn't capitalized on its
web presence and was overtaken by social networking upstarts. Time will tell. Is Mash a re-constituted 360 or the new Facebook??

It definitely needs a LOT more work, it is definitely only at a beta stage, you can just tell. It seems to be a little more open in some aspects, but more restrictive in others, and this can be good, especially since maybe this way people won't make such clutter of their profiles.

Building a social network in reverse way

Building a social networking site need some creative thinkings. The centralized model need a total overhaul. Instead, a reverse-building process should be in place from the grassroot and up, simular to the process of how a society is coming together and formed. Check out further thoughts and a tool from www.feasystem.com.
