Storage newcomer ADrive offering up 50GB for free

I'm big on places to store a lot of files, and Web storage newcomer ADrive seems up to the challenge. The host serves up a whopping 50GB of storage for free, with the only bandwidth limitations being in the size of the files you can upload, which are capped at a reasonable 2GB. The free "beta" accounts are supplemented with ads (hence the AD in the name), which show up on the top and bottom of your file explorer.

While lacking some of the graphical beauty and familiarity of other file-hosting services like Box.net and DigitalBucket, ADrive lets you arrange whatever you'd uploaded into nested directories to help maintain organization. It also doesn't require any special software to upload or download your files.

The one major downfall I came across is the Java-powered file uploader, which uses a pop-up status indicator to let you know what's going on with your transfers. The problem is that it takes control of whatever else you're doing in that browser window. This means uploading large files should be done in another instance of your browser just in case you feel like regaining control of whatever tabs you had open.

Regardless, I found the performance on file transfer to be phenomenal. Given our speed here at CNET HQ in San Francisco is faster than what most people have at home, the uploader will take as much bandwidth as you can give it--which should come in handy if you've got Verizon FiOS or live in Sweden.

Actually, for files smaller than 10 MB, I think nothing beats the GSpace extension for Firefox...
Anyway, thanks for the useful bit of info...
Nothing sounds as good as "free"... :D
Thanks, 'Dexter Greycells'.

Well let me think . What files do I want store I the eternal vastness of cyberspace?

Guess it won't be something that I really don' t care about sharing! For if I really cared about keeping the data private I would not be placing it where it will float around it the void 4ever

Besides how are you going to access your files when the crunch comes??

Looks good, but they ask for way too much personal info when registering; i.e. first and last name, address, and phone number.

you mean, the ADS are NOT a major downfall??

for a Free service I guess that is reasonable, but still, ADS are a a major downfall IMHO.

Thank you Josh Lowensohn for this great review last week. Also, thank you to all users for the support & feedback you have sent us and for joining ADrive.

We have many new features being released. A few highlights are:
*Online editing of documents and spreadsheets using ZohoŽ (no need to download, edit, save, and then upload anymore),
*Remote file transferring (enter a URL and transfer files directly to your ADrive account)
*Support of non-English characters in file names
*Complete folder and directory upload
*And a new search tool

More information about our new features can be found on our Services page.

In the near future, we will release a full production version of ADrive including paid services (don't worry, if a feature is free now, it will remain free).

Again, thank you for your support & feedback!

I found Adrive by accident and love that they have LoTs of room ...registered right away! Uploaded a bunch of my family pics as backup and such. Now three days later,I can't even get adrive to load up when I try to go to it! Not even on the computer at my brothers house-or even my sisters or my moms! And we all have different ISP's! What's the use if you can't even get into it!?!?

If you are using Firefox you will have a hard time even getting to the site. I am forced to use IE 7 to do any file transfers. I then use Firefox to do more surfing while files are being uploaded cause the browser is locked during transfers.

Or just open a new browser instance.
