Set Web e-mail as default Firefox e-mail

In olden days, when you clicked on an e-mail link in your browser, it had to have an e-mail client to launch. That method doesn't work if you use a service such as Gmail or Yahoo Mail as your main account.

Firefox 3 to the rescue. Watch our video on how to do this tip, then come back here for the written steps.

Go to Tools and options (Firefox and Preferences on a Mac).

Choose Applications.

Search "mailto".

In the drop-down menu Choose Yahoo Mail.

What? You don't use Yahoo Mail? Thanks to Lifehacker.com for publishing the instructions for how to use Gmail.

Open your Gmail in Firefox.

You'll need this string of code to enter.

javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail")

Press add application.

And now when you click an e-mail link, it will ask you which Web mail program you'd like to use.

All I ever did was select "Compose mail in Gmail" in Google Notifier. That has worked well for me.

Among the options, there's also Apple Mail and Facebook :P

That's not true. I can do that just fine in IE7. I could probably open up mailto: links in IE6 and earlier, too, though I'm not sure...

All this hype regarding Firefox -- where does the money come from? I don't get it. IE7 still uses memory better on my XP Thinkpad here, and it has little quirks that make me like it better than Firefox, Opera and Safari. I downloaded FF3 the other day and I was having trouble playing YouTube videos for crying out loud! I mean it's a very good browser -- all the four major browsers are quite capable -- but I don't get all the bashing of IE7, frankly. I think it's just trendy to do that.

Oh wait maybe it's just Hotmail. Yeah you can set IE to open up "Windows Live Mail" and it takes you to Hotmail through the browser. Not sure about gmail, yahoomail...

Hello? Is this thing on? I just don't get it.

Okay, I need the string of code to enter. But where? Where do I enter the string of code?

Also, where is the Add Application button? Uh oh. I thought it might show up in this mailto program you are talking about, so I removed the Yahoo Mail from the application details. Only now it says I can't even "add Yahoo". What gives?

I would appreciate a little more information and a little less style. Thank you.

you want to paste in the address bar.
First type in gmail.com
then in the same address bar paste in the url in the blog, paste in the entire url.
hit enter.
you will get a notification below the address bar asking you to use this as an application click add then you are done.
here is a link to Tom Merritt's video I had to watch a couple of time and pause to see what he was doing so watch careful.

On my desktop PC I managed to add the string easily with no problems and it's working as it should. I am trying to do the same on my laptop but the bar with the "add application" button doesn't appear at all neither some error message. On the Error Console on the tools menu i read a message "exception not allowed to register a protocol handler...etc" Any idea of how to fix this JS problem?

I went through quite a bit of effort to make FF3's Mailto-related functions work correctly with the "new" Yahoo Mail Classic. I finally ended up using an extension called Webmail Compose to make it work. Everything works great, except Firefox's Send Link function.

Anyway, in the process I deleted the Yahoo Mail protocol handler (not needed, since Webmail Compose intercepts any MailTo functions), and I suspect this is why Send Link doesn't work.

I'd like to restore that protocol handler, but I can't figure out how to do that. I tried re-installing FF3, since I'm pretty sure the Yahoo Mail protocol handler is "bundled" with it. I also tried installing Yahoo Toolbar, thinking that might re-install the protocol handler. No go...

If anyone can go into their about:config file and let me know the values for that protocol handler, I should be able to use registerProtocolHandler to restore it.

Any help will be much appreciated.
