Apple exhibits Final Cut Studio 2
LAS VEGAS--Apple on Sunday introduced Final Cut Studio 2, its high-end video-editing software, and unveiled Final Cut Server, designed to help broadcasters manage postproduction.

Apple received applause at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show here when demonstrating the upgrades to Final Cut Pro. The software now enables simultaneous editing of different video formats and the removal of unwanted camera movements. It also incorporates a speedier process for dialogue replacement.

The new server, along with 10 concurrent licenses, will go on sale in the summer for $999. Those wishing to buy a server with unlimited licensing will pay $1,999.

Final Cut Studio Pro 2, due to be released in May, will run $1,299 or $499 for an upgrade.

"We've been working hard to make this the biggest upgrade we've ever seen in professional applications," said Rob Schoeben, Apple's vice president of application product marketing, who added that the number of Final Cut Pro users has grown from 500,000 to 800,000 in the past year.

At the start of the presentation, Schoeben dropped in multiple video clips shot on varying formats to show how easy it was to edit them together via Apple's new Open Format Timeline. In another example, a videographer jiggles the camera slightly when shooting a motorcycle racing down a street. Final Cut Pro 6 fixes that with a tool called SmoothCam.

"We took some of the great technology in Shake and brought SmoothCam down to Final Cut Pro," Schoeben said.

Also part of Final Cut Pro 6 is Apple's ProRess 422 format, a tool to help manage uncompressed high-definition video. ProRess 422 shrinks HD-quality files into standard definition sizes to make it easier to transfer and edit, Schoeben said.

Apple also introduced a new application for professional color grading and finishing.

Wish I had a Mac...

Then I could use this, and Aperture, and all those great programs for OS X, oh well... I'll just change how my Linux desktop looks and use GIMP, CinePaint, etc... (Yes, I know that GIMP doesn't handle CMYK natively, so sue me. When the new version comes out, they'll fix that.)

It's just another crap product from Apple.

Uh yeah, right

Not a wildly successful technology, like the Zune?

You live in Jerry Seinfeld's bizzaro world, right? In case you haven't
noticed, Finalcut Pro is THE standard for video editing now. And it
only runs on Macs. It must be very troubling for a Zune fan.

Apple Now Dominates This Market
by dansterpower April 16, 2007 2:45 AM PDT
This release of Final Cut allows Apple to further its growing lead
over Avid and Adobe.

Did you know that three are now 800,000 Professional Final Cut
Media Editors using Apple boxes with Final Cut?

Yep! And this not according to Apple but to the National
Association of Broadcasters. And this does not event take into
the Account the Exploding Indie HD file market.

If you doubt the significance of this release, and if you wonder
why Apple is a GROWING force in pro-level desktops, then do
some honest, unbiased research and learn why.

The power and capability of these new Apps is revolutionary.

Give us the source of your claim, please. URL, magazine article, something.

I find it hard to believe that there are 800,000 Pro Video editors out there. It's possible, but that would indicate there are hundreds of thousands of more editors than there are JOBS in that industry. Hmm. Must have been a big layoff.

Prices is the Amazing Thing

Only $999 for Final Cut Server!

That is an amazingly low cost price.

This is the tool that us Video Editors have been asking for. It
makes handling vast amounts of media more manageable.

And did I mention the price? Wow.

Some great advances and strange omissions
by keclapp May 22, 2007 6:26 AM PDT
I have to admit, I'm pumped to receive my upgrade - color and
motion 3 in particular. I do find 2 things odd, however - that
motion 3, though now supports 3d comp & animation does not
support shadows...And 2, that DVD Studio Pro was not given an
upgrade. it used to be that DVD Studio Pro was pretty much
unmatched in the market for Desktop DVD creation, but the past
few years have seen huge changes with HDDVD and BluRay, both
of which Apple supports, and neither of which DVD Studio Pro
fully supports. Looking at Adobe's move back to the Mac
platform and Encor's growing feature set and tight intigration
with Photoshop and After Effects, I'm afraid Apple may have hurt
themselves were DVD Studio Pro is concerned...
