Google tracks favorite queries

Popular search engine Google has launched Zeitgeist, a page that highlights the terms Google searchers are entering. It analyzes queries entered at Google.com and reports on which ones are advancing or declining in popularity. The search engine said it logs 100 million queries per day through partners including Yahoo and its own Web site, with more than half of those searches taking place on Google.com.

The company denied that it seeks to enter the business of distributing and selling data gleaned through search, calling it "not part of our mission."

"Google has a bunch of interesting data and also tries to keep an eye on social trends," said Google representative David Krane of Zeitgeist, news of which was first posted to technology discussion site Slashdot.org. "Juxtaposing the two is fun for the company to do."
